A multi-split system connects two to five indoor units to a single outdoor unit. You condition several rooms without covering the facade with outdoor units, with fewer pipe runs and one point of service. Each indoor unit is controlled separately.

It depends on the outdoor unit – the most common models support 2, 3 or 4 indoor units, larger ones up to 5. The combined indoor capacity may slightly exceed the outdoor rating because all units rarely run at maximum together.
Separate units are more flexible and a fault stops only one. Multi-split wins where space for outdoor units is limited or you want a cleaner look. System prices are usually similar.
